Homosassa Fishing Academy

Where Education Meets Adventure on the Water

Learn from a Local Legend

Captain "Red Ed" Brennan has been living his dream, fishing the pristine waters of the Homosassa and Chassahowitzka Rivers on Florida's Nature Coast since the early 1980s.

Our goal is to give your child a head start toward becoming a skilled angler, a safe boater, and an environmentally conscious citizen.

What Your Child Will Learn

  • Boating Safety: Rules of the road, weather patterns, and emergency ocean procedures.
  • Navigation: Reading local waterways, docking techniques, and safe channel crossing.
  • Angling Skills: Local fishing tactics, knot tying, and proper gear handling.
  • Water Ethics: Environmental conservation and respectful behavior on the water.

  • Footwear: Proper boat shoes (non-marking soles).
  • Gear: Polarized sunglasses.
  • Food: Pack a lunch or snacks if needed.

What Not to Bring

What if the ocean is rough?

There is no disappointment here! If the open water gets too rough, we safely fall back to the beautiful, Homosassa River. Students will practice navigating channels and sandbars, spot wildlife, and enjoy a timeless river adventure.

What about sea sickness?

Everyone handles the ocean differently. To ensure your child doesn't miss out on the experience, some families find that non-drowsy motion sickness prevention aids are helpful. Please note that we only fish offshore in very mild conditions to maximize comfort.

What about Safety?

Captain "Red Ed" is U.S.C.G. licensed and Insured. Safety is of utmost importance and the Captain has the final decision when it comes to weather or any other safety concerns.
